New Zealand Radio Sector New Zealand international relationship activities, in the context of radio spectrum management, are focussed in the New Zealand Radio Sector. The New Zealand Radio Sector is also a forum where the government interacts with New Zealand Radio Industry, to share views and information relating to development of New Zealand’s radio environment. New Zealand Radio Sector membership is designed to be mutually beneficial to both the Ministry and the Radio Sector membership. For example, it is in the interest of sustainable economic development to prepare for international multi-lateral negotiation with sound knowledge of the New Zealand radio industry and the Radio Sector forum provides for such information interchange. The New Zealand Radio Sector is convened and chaired by the Ministry of Economic Development at regular intervals. There are approximately four general meetings of the Radio Sector per year. Most Radio Sector meetings are accommodated at the Ministry’s premises in Wellington. The Radio Sector is founded and operated on a set of principles agreed by its members. Membership of the New Zealand Radio Sector is voluntary, and organisations with an interest radio matters are encouraged to register their interest. The Radio Sector is comprised of experts in the fields of law, economics, public policy, and engineering directly related to all aspects radio spectrum management and utilisation. These experts come from positions in private industry, and in government. They may be involved in fully commercial activities, or in providing services of a quasi-commercial nature. Subservient groups to the Radio Sector e.g. study groups, a preparatory group, or ad hoc groups are chaired from within the Radio Sector membership. The chairs are agreed at a general radio sector meeting. Holding the chair of the Radio Sector or any of the subservient groups attracts some responsibility and obligation to ensure smooth running and progress towards agreed goals. The New Zealand Radio Sector focuses its international efforts in two main directions or goals; formulation of New Zealand’s positions relative to World Radio Conferences, and ongoing input towards the work of ITU Radio Sector Study Groups to improve the body of knowledge available for radio spectrum management and engineering. Preparation and formulation of positions relative to the next World Radio Conference (WRC-2011-12) is achieved through the work of the Conference Preparatory Group (CPG). Ongoing input towards the work of ITU Radio Sector Study Groups is achieved through the work of six national study groups, corresponding to the six study groups of the ITU-R. This, the international relationships website and the pages herein, is designed to be tools used for the determination of New Zealand national position with regard to participation in international multi-lateral and bi-lateral discussions related to the management and use of the radio spectrum.
